Einbürgerungstest: the state questions, all 16 Länder

Three of the 33 questions on your test come from the federal state you apply in, and they are different in every one. This deck carries the state questions for all sixteen Länder, each card labelled with the state it belongs to.

What this deck teaches

The state questions follow a pattern once you see it: the capital, the state parliament and how long it sits, the title of the head of government, which ministries the state does and does not have, a river or a district, and the colours of the flag. Knowing the pattern is most of the work; the specifics are quick after that.

They are kept in one deck rather than sixteen because the answer to "which minister does this state not have" is the same joke in every state — there is no foreign minister, because foreign policy is federal — and seeing it recur across states teaches the federal division of powers better than any single state's three cards could.

If you only want your own state, the label at the start of each card makes them easy to find, and you can delete the rest after importing. The coat-of-arms and map questions are not here: their four options are pictures.

How to study for the Einbürgerungstest with VoiceCards

  1. Listen through a section first. Open the deck in Listen mode and let it read question then answer, hands-free. Before you start testing yourself it helps to have simply heard the material once — the questions are long and the answers are short, and hearing that shape is half of following them under pressure.
  2. Say the answer, do not pick it. Switch to Speak mode. You get the question with no options, and you say the answer out loud. This is harder than a multiple-choice app and that is the point: recognising the right option is a different skill from producing it, and only one of them survives a bad night's sleep.
  3. Twenty or thirty a day. The federal set is a few weeks of short daily sessions, not one weekend. Spacing is what makes this stick, and it costs nothing — the deck plays hands-free while you are doing something else anyway.
  4. Add your own state at the end. Three of your 33 questions come from your Bundesland. Do the federal material first, then the state deck — it is short, and by then you will recognise the pattern the state questions follow.
