German adjectives in opposite pairs, spoken
Adjectives are easiest to learn in pairs, because the opposite is a hook that a lone word does not have. See "groß" and say "klein"; see "teuer" and say "billig".
What this deck teaches
Pairs work because they give each word a place to sit. Learning "laut" on its own leaves it floating among a hundred other adjectives; learning it against "leise" gives you both, and gives you a scale to hang them on. It is the oldest vocabulary trick there is and it survives because it works.
This is the fastest deck of the four — short cards, short answers, no grammar attached. It fits into the gaps where a longer deck does not: a bus stop, a queue, the two minutes before a lesson starts.
The deck also runs in both directions, which doubles it for free. Answering "klein" to "groß" and then "groß" to "klein" are different retrievals, and doing both is closer to how you will actually need the words.
A few pairs are directional rather than strictly opposite — links and rechts, vorne and hinten, mit and ohne. They are here because they behave the same way in memory and because you need them just as early.
How to drill adjective pairs with VoiceCards
- Answer fast, then move on. These cards should take a second each. If a pair makes you stop and think, that is the one to star — but do not slow the whole deck down for it. Speed is the point of this one.
- Run it in both directions. Once you can go from the word to its opposite, flip the deck and go back the other way. The second direction is a different piece of memory, and it is the one that shows up when you are trying to speak.
- Put them into a sentence out loud. When a pair sticks, say a short sentence with each half — "Das Zimmer ist zu klein." An adjective you have only ever said alone tends to stay alone.
- Use it as a warm-up. Five minutes of this before a longer deck gets your mouth into German. It is a small thing that makes the first ten cards of the harder deck go noticeably better.
