Korean travel phrases for Japanese speakers: say it in Korean, not in English

Every card gives a travel situation in Japanese and asks you to say the Korean out loud: ordering for two, asking which stop to get off at, telling the front desk there is no hot water. Ten settings, ten cards each.

What this deck teaches

Japanese and Korean share enough word order that learners get to useful sentences unusually fast — far faster than the same learner gets there in English. What slows people down is not the grammar but never having said the sentence before. A phrase you have only read stays silent when the moment arrives.

The settings are the ones a trip actually runs through: arriving and clearing the airport, getting around by subway, bus and taxi, ordering in a restaurant and in a cafe, shopping, checking into a hotel, asking for directions, paying, basic greetings, and the things that go wrong. They are ordered so you can work through them roughly in the order a trip does.

The answers are written in Hangul only, with no romaji or katakana reading. That is not purism — the app picks a voice per column, and a reading aid mixed into the answer breaks the detection so the card would be read aloud and scored in the wrong language. If you are still learning to read Hangul, start in Listen mode: hearing the Korean while you see the Japanese task is a workable way in.

Three moments on a trip to Korea

The deck follows a trip in order. The first six cards on the sheet are all at the airport, so here are two later settings as well.

At immigration

Two questions you can expect: why you came and how long you will stay.

空港:入国の目的を伝える
관광하러 왔어요.
空港:滞在期間を伝える
일주일 정도 있을 거예요.

Ordering at a cafe

Order, then say you will drink it there.

カフェ:注文する
아이스 아메리카노 한 잔 주세요.
カフェ:店内で飲むと伝える
여기서 마시고 갈게요.

Asking for help

Get someone's attention first, then say what happened.

トラブル:助けを求める
저 좀 도와주시겠어요?
トラブル:物をなくしたと伝える
가방을 잃어버렸어요.

How to study Korean travel phrases

  1. Say it before you read it. Look at the Japanese situation and produce the Korean out loud first. Reading the Hangul and repeating it is a different, much easier skill than retrieving it.
  2. Work through one setting. Do all ten restaurant cards, or all ten hotel cards. Being able to handle one place completely beats knowing a scattered phrase from each.
  3. Listen on the way there. Korean rhythm and final endings are hard to guess from spelling. Loop the deck on the flight or the train in and the polite endings stop sounding like something you are assembling.
  4. Practise the trouble cards too. The lost-bag and wrong-charge cards are the ones you least want to improvise. They are also the ones people skip.
