Writing Vocabulary for the naturalization test: hear it, write it

The writing test is dictation: the officer reads a sentence aloud and you write it down, and you must get one of up to three correct. Every word that can appear is on one official USCIS list, and this deck is that list.

What this deck teaches

Because the task is dictation, the drill is to hear the word and produce the spelling — which is exactly what Listen mode gives you. Play a word, write it down, then look at the card to check yourself.

The list is grouped the way USCIS groups it: people, civics, places, months, holidays, verbs, and function and content words. It overlaps with the reading list but is not the same — several words appear on only one of the two.

USCIS does not publish the actual dictation sentences, only the vocabulary they are built from. Once the spellings are solid, have someone read the words back to you in short sentences to rehearse the real thing.

How to study the writing vocabulary with VoiceCards

  1. Play the list in Listen mode. Let the deck read the words to you. Write each one down as you hear it, then check the card. That is the test task exactly.
  2. Say each word aloud in Speak mode. See the word, say it out loud, and let the app grade how it came out. Pronunciation is what the officer is actually judging, and you cannot hear your own mistakes by reading silently.
  3. Work one category at a time. The list is grouped — people, civics, places, holidays, verbs, function words. Take one group per session; the words in a group show up together in the test sentences.
  4. Come back to the ones that trip you. Star anything you stumble over and replay it the next day. These lists are short enough that a week of daily passes covers all of them.
