California CDL general knowledge test, out loud
Every applicant takes the general knowledge test, and it draws on three long sections of the handbook: who needs a CDL, how to drive the vehicle safely, and how to carry cargo. This deck holds the testable facts from all three, one fact per card, so you can work through them by voice instead of re-reading the same pages.
What this deck teaches
The general knowledge test is the widest of the three. It covers licence classes and endorsements, the seven-step inspection, shifting and backing, seeing and communicating, speed and space management, hazard perception, night and winter and mountain driving, emergencies, skid recovery, fires, alcohol and drugs, and the hazardous-materials rules that apply to every commercial driver. Cargo weight, balance and securement come with it.
Most of what it asks is a number or a rule: at what weight a vehicle needs a CDL, how much following distance a length of vehicle needs, how far ahead to look, which endorsement a load requires. Those are exactly the facts that slip when you study by reading, and exactly the ones you catch yourself getting wrong the moment you say them out loud.
The cards are in English because the tests and the handbook are. California offers the commercial knowledge tests in English, Arabic, Chinese, Punjabi, Russian and Spanish, but the skills test must be conducted in English, so the vocabulary is worth learning in the language you will be examined in.
How to study the general knowledge test with VoiceCards
- Listen through a section before you drill it. Open the deck in Listen mode and let it read each question and then the answer. The handbook is dense and reads slowly; hearing a section straight through on a drive gives you the shape of it before you start testing yourself on the details.
- Answer out loud, not in your head. Switch to Speak mode. See only the question, say the answer aloud, then reveal the card. Saying a number wrong is obvious the moment you hear yourself do it, and silent reading hides exactly the mistakes the test punishes.
- Twenty a day beats one long cram. Two thousand cards is a semester, not a weekend. Twenty a day gets you through it before most people finish re-reading the handbook once, and the spacing is what makes the facts stay.
- Loop the numbers that come out shaky. Star anything you hesitate on and give it an extra Listen pass the next morning. Numbers are where this test is won and lost, and a limit you half-remember is worse than one you know you have to look up.
