Memorize Surah Al-A'raf (The Heights): recite the Quran by heart

Surah Al-A'raf (الأعراف, "The Heights") is a Meccan surah of 206 verses — one of the longest in the Quran. The deck splits it one ayah per card so a daily portion is something you can actually set.

What this deck teaches

Hifz — memorizing the Quran — is done in Arabic, by hearing and repeating the exact wording, ayah after ayah. Surah Al-A'raf is one of the longest in the Quran at 206 verses; people work through it over months, not weeks. One card per ayah lets you take a fixed daily portion and, just as importantly, keep revising everything already behind you.

It is a Meccan surah, sitting in the first half of the mushaf at number 7. Meccan surahs tend towards shorter ayat and a strong cadence, which is a help when you are reciting from memory rather than reading.

Its title, "The Heights", is drawn from a word that appears in the text. Learning the meaning alongside the sound gives you a second handle on the surah. The reference is the prompt and the Arabic ayah is the answer, read aloud; the English translation rides along as a note you can show or ignore. Keeping the two scripts in separate fields is what stops the Arabic being mangled when it is spoken. Arabic text is provided by the Tanzil Project (CC BY 3.0); the English is Abdullah Yusuf Ali's translation (public domain).

How to memorize Surah Al-A'raf with VoiceCards

  1. Hear the Arabic on a loop. Open the deck in Listen mode and let it play the reference, then the Arabic ayah, on a loop. Hearing Surah Al-A'raf hands-free — commuting, cooking, walking — builds the cadence before you ever try to recite it.
  2. Recite from the reference. Switch to Speak mode. See only the reference, recite the ayah from memory, then reveal the card and check every word. The English note is there when you want the meaning, and out of the way when you do not.
  3. A portion a day, and revise behind you. At 206 verses this is a months-long deck. A fixed daily portion plus a standing revision of what is behind you is the only approach that finishes; racing the front and never looking back does not.
  4. Loop the ones that slip. Star the ayat that come out shaky and give them their own short Listen loop the next morning. An ayah you can recite cleanly from the reference three days running is one you own.
