Memorize Surah Ar-Ra'd (The Thunder): recite the Quran by heart

Surah Ar-Ra'd (الرعد, "The Thunder") is a Medinan surah of 43 verses — enough that it wants to be worked in sections. Each card carries one ayah: reference to recite from, Arabic to recite, English as a note.

What this deck teaches

Hifz — memorizing the Quran — is done in Arabic, by hearing and repeating the exact wording, ayah after ayah. Surah Ar-Ra'd runs to 43 verses, which is past the point where you can hold it all at once. Working it in sections of five or ten, and revising the earlier sections while you add new ones, is what stops the beginning slipping while you learn the end.

It is a Medinan surah, at number 13 in the mushaf. Medinan surahs generally run to longer ayat and more sustained passages, so the units you memorize are bigger and the phrasing inside each ayah is worth slowing down for.

The name means "The Thunder", taken from the text itself; knowing what it refers to helps keep this surah distinct from its neighbours as your memorized list grows. The reference is the prompt and the Arabic ayah is the answer, read aloud; the English translation rides along as a note you can show or ignore. Keeping the two scripts in separate fields is what stops the Arabic being mangled when it is spoken. Arabic text is provided by the Tanzil Project (CC BY 3.0); the English is Abdullah Yusuf Ali's translation (public domain).

How to memorize Surah Ar-Ra'd with VoiceCards

  1. Hear the Arabic on a loop. Open the deck in Listen mode and let it play the reference, then the Arabic ayah, on a loop. Hearing Surah Ar-Ra'd hands-free — commuting, cooking, walking — builds the cadence before you ever try to recite it.
  2. Recite from the reference. Switch to Speak mode. See only the reference, recite the ayah from memory, then reveal the card and check every word. The English note is there when you want the meaning, and out of the way when you do not.
  3. Sections, not sprints. Take 43 verses in blocks of five or ten and revise the finished blocks alongside the new one. The revision is not optional at this length — it is the part that makes it stick.
  4. Loop the ones that slip. Star the ayat that come out shaky and give them their own short Listen loop the next morning. An ayah you can recite cleanly from the reference three days running is one you own.
