Ham Radio Technician safety flashcards for the 2026 to 2030 exam

Finish the T0 safety subelement as one compact set. The 36 cards cover the precautions a new amateur operator is expected to know before powering equipment or installing an antenna.

What this deck teaches

Safety is smaller than the other exam areas, but the questions span several kinds of risk. Studying them together makes the boundaries clear: electrical protection, tower work, antenna placement, batteries, lightning and radio frequency exposure.

Many answers describe an action, not a definition. Say the safe action aloud and imagine doing it at a real station so the rule becomes a procedure you can recall under pressure.

This deck belongs to a 397 text-card set built from the public domain NCVEC 2026 to 2030 Technician question pool, valid from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2030. The set omits 12 diagram questions that require the official visual references. VoiceCards is not affiliated with NCVEC or the FCC.

How to study Technician safety

  1. Sort by hazard. Run separate rounds for electrical, mechanical, lightning, battery and RF exposure risks.
  2. Say the first safe action. Answer each scenario with what you would do first before checking the wording.
  3. Repeat the numeric limits. Star cards that depend on distance, duty cycle, power or exposure evaluation details.
  4. Finish with one full round. The deck is short enough to answer all 36 cards aloud as a final safety check.

Sample cards

Which of the following is a safety hazard of a 12-volt storage battery that lacks internal protection circuitry? Choice A: Touching both terminals with your hands can cause electrical shock. Choice B: Shorting the terminals can cause burns, fire, or an explosion. Choice C: RF emissions from a nearby transmitter can cause the electrolyte to emit poison gas. Choice D: All these choices are correct.
Shorting the terminals can cause burns, fire, or an explosion
What health hazard is posed by electrical current flowing through the body? Choice A: It may cause injury by heating body tissue. Choice B: It may disrupt the electrical functions of cells. Choice C: It may cause involuntary muscle contractions. Choice D: All these choices are correct.
All these choices are correct
In the United States, what circuit does black wire insulation indicate in a three-wire 120 V AC cable? Choice A: Neutral. Choice B: Hot. Choice C: Equipment ground. Choice D: Negative.
Hot
What is the purpose of a fuse in an electrical circuit? Choice A: To prevent power supply ripple from damaging a component. Choice B: To remove power in case of an overload. Choice C: To limit current and prevent shocks. Choice D: All these choices are correct.
To remove power in case of an overload
Why should a 5-ampere fuse never be replaced with a 20-ampere fuse? Choice A: The larger fuse would be likely to blow because it is rated for higher current. Choice B: The power supply ripple would greatly increase. Choice C: Excessive current could cause a fire. Choice D: Voltage drop in the higher current fuse could result in excessively low voltage to the device.
Excessive current could cause a fire
What is a good way to guard against electrical shock at your station? Choice A: Use three-wire cords and plugs for all AC powered equipment. Choice B: Connect all AC powered station equipment to a common safety ground. Choice C: Ensure all capacitors used for high-voltage DC are fully discharged before working inside equipment. Choice D: All these choices are correct.
All these choices are correct
